A NeepawaVotes.com user asked:

What do you think should be done with Lake Irwrin?

The Candidates responded:

Ken Waddell

Lake Irwin is located in the RM of Langford and the Town of Neepawa has no authority to develop that area. The Town of Neepawa jointly owns the old, abandoned campground with the RM of Langford but the way the relationship between the Town and the RM has gone in the past few years, it will take a lot of work to get anything going on that piece of land. Neepawa council needs to improve its relationship especially with Langford and with all the RM councils.

Bob Durston

The Town and RM of Langford are joint owners of a strip of property along the west side of the lake. Originally a seasonal campground and cottage development was initiated and the lots were leased long term. Several years ago the owners agreed to sell the lots to the cottage owners as there was a desire to build permanent homes. The balance of the property, which is the old campground at the southend is still jointly owned but there has been no further development. As mayor I am prepared to ask council to consider discussions with RM of Langford on the topic of joint property development and other issues surrounding Lake Irwin such as sustainable fisheries and tourism. All of this property is in the RM of Langford, thus all property taxes and services to the property are RM of Langford responsibility.

I spent many a summer’s day at Lake Irwin water skiing, had my swimming lessons there and have done a little fishing in both summer and winter as well. I remember well the Canada Day celebrations there with my husband and children.

Those are some of the great things that make Neepawa attractive when choosing a place to live.
I would like to see it developed further as far as camping, cabins and year round housing. Water quality for recreation as well as sustaining fish is very important to me and would certainly add to its appeal to those that would choose to live and visit here.
